Scholz studied painting at the Berlin University of the Arts. In the 1920s and 30s he used Expressionist stylistic techniques to depict the hardships of the middle class during the war and postwar years. In 1937 his work was declared ‘degenerate art’ and forbidden from exhibition. Scholz moved to Alpbach in Tyrol and turned to biblical themes after 1945.
