Krautgasser studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, the Academy for Applied Art in Munich 1941-44, and the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under Gerda Matejka-Felden and Herbert Boeckl 1946-47. Influenced by French Expressionism, he produced numerous still lifes, vedute, landscapes, portraits, religious paintings and life drawings. His experimental streak led him to mixing techniques such as tempura, sand, and plaster and paintings done in varnish.
